NEW SEASON POTATOES
The appearance of the early new season potatoes is keenly awaited by customers at this time. In most of the UK, planting is just getting underway but the early crop of Jersey Royal Potatoes has arrived. Firm and waxy in texture, their earthy flavour with a touch of iodine comes from the light island soil combined with the centuries old practice of fertilising this crop with the local vraic seaweed. This technique is still adhered to by many of the island farmers.
This week we also have Noirmoutier Potatoes. These are grown on sandy soil enriched by kelp in the mild climate and salty air of the island of Noirmoutier, south of Brittany. Similarly waxy in texture to Jersey Royals, they have a sweet, nutty flavour and saline quality. We also have Starlette Brittany Potatoes in this week, not quite as special but a welcome herald of Spring. New varities are now arriving by the week.
